View Full Version : How do you REALLY feel about A Bathing Ape today?

I'm curious to know how you all feel about Bathing Ape as a brand/ movement today? Do you really feel like a cornball if you step out the house with bapestas on, despite how fly the shoe actually is and how many people STILL don't know about the shiny sneakers with the star on the side?
How about when you throw on a bathing ape crew neck or pullover? - i.e. a generals pullover/ crew neck- People still look at the sweater like. "whats that about?", at least for me. Its another story when you have a shark or tiger on and people are like "wtf:eek:?"
Do you guys feel like A Bathing Ape (the movement) is really dead, or is it the idea of wearing Bape stop you from rockin' it?
---I know in NY the brand is definitely not what it used to be, and everyone from new york knows why
...Discuss. Don't view this and not say something..
A Bathing Ape is still much alive in my heart. OG pieces and classic designs only.
We rockin' it hard in Paris and we are still reppin' the ape. BAPE is a lifestyle and once you taste it you can never forget it. I rarely go out without wearing some BAPE, even if it's just an accessory.
The BAPE movement is dead in the general public eye and i can understand it, recycling, nothing exciting in the collections, you can usually only find 1 or 2 nice items in each new collection and that's it.
But like i said, it's a lifestyle. BAPE has an awesome past and you have to go back in time to find the REAL BAPE and i think we should all revive the brand by wearing the classic pieces that made bape so popular, that's what i'm trying to do here in Paris !
"---I know in NY the brand is definitely not what it used to be, and everyone from new york knows why" Explain ?

i was waiting for your response my dude. haha
Man.. BAPE in NY is just.. idk man. These kids ate it up. I personally feel like we need a more diverse staff at BWS like how it was back in 05. You rarely see any JPNESE homies in the shop anymore. It just doesnt feel the same. These kids rock the shit so so soo corny man, and i can say that because i witnessed the change. Being there from the very beginning allows me to say how corny these dudes are. They have no knowledge on the brand. They don't know how it used to be.
Ahaha sole yeah you already know what i think.
As for the NY situation, you should get involved man. Any BAPEhead should.

and yeah, i made this thread cause ima shoot a documentary soon one BAPE culture in New York "Old and New".. idk if you remember that picture i posted up a while back
You told me about it a while ago and i said if was really curious to see this. We should really get involved like i said and show BAPE some love. We all kinda have an influence on internet you know...

I still collect and wear bape. Its definitely not worn from head to toe and as loud it was in the beginning. I take a bit more tasteful approach to choosing what is worn and what to just leave for another day. I know how you feel, I wore my kaws varsity today in soho and got mixed reactions, but it just reminds me of when it first started here anyways.
Bape brought me into Japanese street wear scene and allowed me to really meet a lot of different people in which I still work with today and are clients of mine. It doesn't matter what people think about Bathing Ape today or three years ago. People who were really into bape and grew up on its culture still appreciate it in different ways, whether it is collecting older pieces that are probably aren't as expensive and widely available now or just like to have something that reminds them of certain event and time. I look in my wardrobe and see a lot of history, I don't mind that I don't wear most of it, it was just the experience of being there for some of the better times that made it all worth being apart of.
It's always fun to meet people today that recognize older things and can equally appreciate the rarity of people trying to keep it alive in their own way.

Loved it back in the days but then shit got terrible with rehashing the same old designers and it became weird. Nowaday it's gotten a lot better IMO, nicer clean product with minimal branding. Unfortunately fakes are everywhere in Australia and it's ruined the image Bape once had here. Still love the brand in general though and always make a visit to the stores in Harajuku, Shibuya and Aoyama each time i'm there.
Still on the hunt for some grail pieces, OG BBC crewneck for one and certain stas.

I still love BAPE because it was my stepping stone into the whole world of "streetwear"
Although the image of BAPE has changed a great deal over the years, it continues to stay relevant and releases some good items each season (It's not like before when we would eat up anything NIGO pumped out of the factory)
Perhaps it's certain people (i.e. the corny dudes like sole mentioned) who started wearing BAPE that tarnished its reputation and made some of the "real" supporters turn their back on BAPE

i mean... i just feel like BAPE will always be that shit. no matter how much people hate on it.

im still trying to get Halloween bapes, from like 06-07. the orange/black colorway. fucking ill colorway right there
The people who have trended bape on the hype train have come and gone. The people who still appreciate it are still around. I hope in your documentary you get some real bape heads from back in the day and not the next generation cats.

ahah, nah, trust, it'll be originalheads cause i know most of them. the new cats will get like 5 minutes in front of the camera. i really want them to feel offended, haha.

my bape tshirts are now the shirts i sleep in with the exception of a couple. i still definitely rock the camo snowboard when i'm on the slopes and the shark hoody in the streets but i dont think i've bought an item from the store for at least 2 years now. it has a place in my heart for sure but its all about the og items. the newer stuff is just eh for me.
it was definitely the first brand that brought me into the japanese streetwear scene and it will always have a nostalgic place in my style :)

bape introduced me to streetwear and I still love the brand
I have always been a fan of the camo/generals/college logo/sharks
whenever i visit ny or japan bape is always on the to do list as the store interior/exteriors are amazing

I still support Bape pretty hard, whether it's searching for OG items or newer releases. I think it's different if you're used to the Japanese Bape scene though, people there are still supporting the brand and it just has a different vibe from what I read in your posts about the way it's worn in NY. I love seeing the OG cats wearing a mix of 5 year old stuff some recent releases, still rocking it from head to toe.
I Can't really explain it, but Bape to me is just a feeling that I don't get with any other streetwear brand.. And therefore I wil keep on supporting Bape for as long as I feel that connection with it.

Like a lot of you guys already said " Bape introduced me into the world of japanese streetwear"...BAPE filled a gap in my fashion sense which no other brand could fill before...it was a great time collecting, hunting and breathing BAPE back in the days...every new release felt like Xmas for me...
The hunting has stopped, my collection shrunk to mostly OG pieces and less flashy items, except my Sta's (Love my Taipei Bapestas and Snakes)
And i still rock lot of those items...and even buy some new from time to time (mostly Ursus)...
OG BAPE is a part of me and therefore will always be in my heart...no douche will every change that...

I wear my Bape stuff when I feel like it and dont when I dont feel like it. I wore this on Friday because it wasnt that cold but not than warm and didnt want to be weighed down by a jacket:-
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m284/crs-1/IMG_3081.jpg
I have sold a few things like my:-
Og Red Camo
NBHD Stas
Psyche Camo
and other bright bits because they are too out there for me but then I never really wore them. I wouldnt sell stuff like any of my:-
Camos
Futura Collabs
Kaws Collabs
as I like them too much and wouldnt ever find again. I think personally it comes from caring about what other people think about what you wear. I have always been of the opinion
"I dont care if you dont like my clothing as I like it, but its nice if you do"
:)
I doubt I will buy anymore stuff though as I dont need to and its now very average for what it costs.
I am also a lot more sensible now and I used to just buy anything but can now look without needing to purchase.

I think a lot of the people who ''hate'' it now are the ones who just wore it because of Rappers wearing it. LIke if you see BBC it seems to be more popular now as more rappers are mentioning it. When was the last time any of you have really seen celebs rocking BApe like in the old days?

still have love for Bape. Don't wear it as often as I used to but still throw it on every now and then. As I got older I felt myself buying more subtly pieces tho, colors like black, navy and grey. Will continue to wear the clothes and stas as long as I can without looking like a clown.
Ive been wearing the brand since my freshman year in highschool and it's always meant alot to me. Spent many hours sleeping in front of the store just to get clothes LOL. Those days are far gone and I havent boughten anything from the store to wear in well over a year, but I still look for classics and OG pieces when I can

bape is still the only brand i purchase if not for work...
i still wear bape from head to toe on my weekends, even if im heading out to the grocery store.
tbh im not seeing all that many ppl loving and wearing ape on wdywt thread either
so ppl r moving on with their lives and bape is fading out from many bt2 member and we have lost many beloved og members.
its sad but at the same time i need those ppl that can careless about thier ape heats to come back and list thier heats on bt2

I'm totally with everyone here -
Bape definitely got me into street fashion culture, mainly japanese, and I've come to appreciate and chase after fashion so much more after that. It started around 2003 for me when SBs blew up.
I still love Bape for what it is, and I still buy Bape if I see something that I really like. Obviously the OG stuff were much more appealing maybe because those items will be timeless. As for me personally rocking Bape, I still do sometimes, but most of that happens during the summer. In the winter I'm usually wearing dark, tighter clothes so Bape doesn't really shine in that sense.
I'm still very much excited to see Bape churn out some nice items in the new seasons, but I agree that most of these guys who rock Bape in soho really do kill the mood for me. It's a shame, really.

Most people in NY trendhop. The ones who jumped on the brand without knowledge of it are usually the ones that say "its wack now" or "that is old. who still wears that?" I have to incorporate all that into the doc.
Paul, i definitely in all my large tee's haha. I have tees just sitting on my dresser for display. it just looks nice
Neal, i will. you know that. lol, you put in a lot of time on lines man. ahaah but trust me, back in the day, you wouldn't be first all the time. people used to be in front of bape DAYS before.
I feel like we need another big drop or maybe even a bape pop up store that will sell some timeless pieces. or maybe even a new boutique somewhere else in NY. like some underground shit that no one will find.

i love bape more today than i did when i first heard about it like 5-6 years ago. I'm still buying og bape stuff and i have more bape clothing than any other stuff.
tbh i was never concerned when the so called "lil wayne/soulja boi" years came as there followers only wore bapestas/colour camos/baby milo sh*te, this was by far the worst stuff bape released.
i still get alot of compliments from people when i wear my futura/bape scout shirts/ bape wtaps gear, this too me was real bape and ill continue to wear it :)

wouldn't say those were the worst items they ever released. Definitley very OG and were very sought after at the time. I feel like all that crazy camo and all over print is what ppl who don't really know Bape think of when they think of the Brand. All that stuff is long dead so they think the brand is as well

i still love bape. if there was a bape store in amsterdam i'd rock it head to toe as it's still a great lifestyle brand. but there's not, so i can't try anything on before buying and i can't afford importing everything with marked up prices, import taxes and shipping costs and then sell it for a lower price cuz it didn't fit well.
so what i'm wearing now is classic brands with supreme as that's another great streetwear/lifestyle brand.

I remember when those came out in NY. I almost fell out in Bape yo. I loved the white/ navy patent leather kaws. They were so clean. And then Chompers came out. grabbed the orange/ green on the spot. no questions asked lolol. i didn't have the funds to get a tee and shit to match back then when that collab was still in play. I agree with what most have said, I 1st noticed it around late 04 and have been attached to it ever since, it came around at the perfect time, fashion was SO STALE at the time and fashion lovers such as myself were STARVING for something fresh, and we couldnt have gotten anything better then bape/milo, and it was more then just fashion...it offers something that no other brand could...a certain magic, somethin non-tangible, was also a great introduction to japanese culture. I dont like most of the newer stuff, i still love older items (tees, hoods, crewnecks) and thats mainly what i buy and wear nowadays...in new, or near new condition. Stopped wearing stas in early 09, i just got over that style of sneaker, only have 1 pair of patent nike af1 that i still wear here and there, MUCH better quality patent leather then what stas had, i remember how easily stas would crease, was very irritating, on nikes u can wear em 100times and the creasing is still so minimal.
With all that being said, OG bape is still very much a part of my everyday.
Peace & Love!

I'm similar to most I like to chuck on a shark or a camo hood every now and again especially now as the winter weather is approaching. Bape is timeless

For an exclusive brand being so popolar in tv is a bad thing imo
Bape reached is high level and like every thing now falls down
if you see the stuff and the collaborations some years ago and now (nbhd e fragment for example) you know Bape looses a lot of creativity and the only good thing out are the rerelease that often killed the old bape heads and the variations of the same design (1000 type of shark)
But who really loved bape could buy somenthing different other brands but still rock bape stuff cause He loved them when He bought, are above the hype and Og ones are the story of the streetwear!

can't say i agree. i think celebs actually kill brands
the brand blows up, most of the original fanbase leave the brand because of that and then when the hype dies, the celeb followers jump to the next trend. they don't care about the history or what a brand stands for like many here do and they're not loyal to brands at all.

Hmmm...I'm surprised by the difference in opinion now
I find knowing a brand's history/message pretty important
I like knowing how designers like NIGO or Shinsuke Takizawa developed and came up with their brands, how it all began, it gives meaning to the clothes on my back
It kinda pisses me off when I see people wear brands they know nothing about simply for the brand name, no offense, but from my observations, a lot of times its Asian kids (i.e. in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, S. Korea)

I haven't bought any Bape items in awhile because of the new style they approched, seems a little nonsensical.
However, I was a huge fan of the first few camo releases as I have three color camo hoods and those are just as loud. I still rock the shit out of all my pieces too (My OG Blue hoody is still my favorite) and I wear a pair of stas every day too to class and shit. The only thing I don't seem to wear much is my jeans w/ the star crotch. I look back on it, and don't understand why I bought it.
If I were to buy new bape items, it would not be anything new. Just the old pieces that I have my eye on, but that seems to be the consensus among most of the members here.
Bapetalk has been through many changes too....OG OG OG when Isamu ran the place, around 04? Then it changed to some shit for like a week...then BT2 came through for all the real bapeheads....and now it's barely bape.

maybe it's just me but I don't give a fuck about the history of any of this shit I just get what I like.......and when it comes to loyalty you can tell that crap to someone else lol........we pay 300 dollars for a hoodie that most certainly took no more then 5 dollars to make :p I’m not throwing stones but you sound like a religious enthusiast after a good brain washing
eh.. lol
agreed. Ive been wearing these clothes for ages but i could care less about the history. I wear them because I like the way they look. Not because they're "exclusive" or I think i can be better than other people because I wear over priced clothing
i don't care for exclusive or think i'm better for wearing a certain brand.. a brand is just a brand, ofcourse it's about design. it's just that if i like how something looks, i alway look into what the brand that made the clothing is about or from.
Korea)
exactly. doesn't piss me off though, they don't care and that's their decision.

My feelings on Bape have changed a lot lately. I've been in it since late 04, which might not be OG considering it was around since 93' but back then I didn't give much of a shit about clothes.
But I would say maybe 04-07 Bape gave me a feeling unlike other clothes. You just felt special wearing it. There was a certain mystique to it because not many people knew what it was, and most that did had no idea how to obtain it, or couldn't put the money on it if they did.
I figure a lot of it has to do with my age as I approach 30, clothes just seem to matter much less to me. Not only because real life responsibility is taking over most ever aspect of my life, but as I get older I just feel a need to dress more mature. I suppose I could spend the money on more button ups and polos and the like, but most of my bape shit is hoodies, T's, truckers, and bright ass shoes. Most of which is stuff I just feel somewhat uncomfortable wearing now, rather then special or unique. I think i've also noticed the stuff doesnt fit as well as I once though it did. The smalls are too small, and the mediums are too big.
The re-sell factor has played a huge part in killing it as well. I used to feel better about buying an item that I could re-sell for similar to what I paid if I no longer wore it, and put the money into some other Bape pieces. Having to basically give away pieces is a real turn off. It also kinda kills the exclusivity when 17 year olds with no style just surf boards like this buying up heavily used bape shit for dirt cheap. I'm not prepared to take massive losses on money put into my collection so these kids can get Bape shit for American Eagle prices.

how else can you hear about a brand if celebs dont wear or it isnt mainstream/big, that a bad example i think, most people here wouldnt have heard of bape if it wasnt for wayne/soulja boi,
only other way you would of heard of bape if it wasnt big/mainstream would of been if you lived in japan and were into the fashion scene
celebs really started to wear it after james lavelle/ian brown wore it when working with nigo for bape sounds

Honestly. I have so much to say but, I don't know how to word it. HA!
Growing up in the same town The Neptunes/NERD/Clipse/FAMLAY/Star Trak had a lot to do with my love for the brand. Which had me on the internet looking for pics of them rocking BAPE.
Pieces that were given to me that I wish I never got rid of...:(

BAPE has been a huge part of my life. It opened up my eyes to streetwear. Like everyone else, I'll always love OG BAPE pieces. As of late. I haven't seen too many pieces I like. A couple tees here and there but, I havent been feeling any of the footwear BAPE puts out anymore. I'll always be a fan of the OG Bapestas (Dull Star Stas). At one point, I was all about collecting that style, until the Marvel series was released. (Silver Surfers and the Hulks are my favorites.)
Circa 2oo5: Funny how I can recall when and where I was and got each pair from.

Circa 200?: HAHA! Seemed so long ago. I tried to collect as many as possible but, it was fun while it lasted.

great thread maine!
hmmm, the only things i have left after selling most of my items are my tees, misc. accessories, and the knit tiger. most of the tees i have i usually use for the weekends when i run ball actually lol. i still see a few items that i like, but i can't really justify paying as much for bape as i did years ago and my brand preferences has expanded since then as well. i do miss the days when this forum was at its peak and very much alive...that's when i was really into the brand. ahh the good ol'days...

i have a few toned down pieces right now and i love the accessories. i have a 2 jackets, a knit tiger, a cap, a bag (which i fucking love), and some other bullshit.
all in all i love the brand for what it is. they still put out pieces that are dope. everything nowhere is cool in my book (the purple and white varsity was new grail status). i think that every brand has things that it does well. bape has those and they will never be truly gone.

can't say i agree. i think celebs actually kill brands
the brand blows up, most of the original fanbase leave the brand because of that and then when the hype dies, the celeb followers jump to the next trend. they don't care about the history or what a brand stands for like many here do and they're not loyal to brands at all.
well, there are those celebs, especially in bape's case, who probably have influenced the way 99% of how members on here have discovered or been attracted to bape (nigo, pharell, kanye, etc)
but there are, of course those celebrties who don't give a shit about the brand itself and wear it as disastrously as possible (chris brown, souljia, etc...)
all i'm sayin, is that in some way, hip hop celebrities and such have shaped the bape brand, whether for better or worse

Bape is mainstream now. It's not what it used to be. Everybody knows the brand now-a-days. One great part of wearing the clothing back in the day was the fact that NO BODY knew about it, how exclusive it was, and the uniqueness. People WERE WILLING to pay $400 for a hoody. Shit, people would drop a fucking STACK on an OG shark. Now that's just ridiculous. You can find stas for less than $100 and the hoodies are not even sought after as much as they used to be. Let's get real, bape is a zombie right now. If they go back to old style, they may get back the Old Bapeheads, but not 100%. I bet if they re-released their old pieces too, they would get more back--like some of the Kaws collab which won't happen...)
It's mutha fuckas like Big Sean and Wale IMO who killed it. Wearing bape, head to toe, of the loudest, most obnoxious pieces only for the reason that it is A Bathing Ape.

I cant see how u can call bape mainstream? Nike is mainstream. i see more LV handbags in 1 day here than i see someone wearing a bape t in a week.
Does everyone in America really wear bape?
Bape hasnt changed much in Japan imo. yes, the queues are a little shorter and the shops tend to have more stock in but i put that down to a combo of current finacial situations and the ease of buying online (i rarely buy from the shops now, using zozotown is much easier for me)
there are still plenty of bape heads here but as usual u never seem to see them outside of directly around the bape store lol
as for me, i still love bape. its difficult to explain really but even though there arent that many pieces that i want to buy from the most recent seasons, im still excited about every mook launch and i still check every week to see whats dropping.
luckily for me, there is no stigma associated with age and what clothes u wear here so i dont have to put up with some kids telling me im too old to wear bape. funnily enough, the only kids ive ever seen in a bape store or wearing bape were western.

I agree with Yom completely. Bape is definitely not mainstream, especially not in America.
Mainstream here is H&M, Gap, Urban Outfitters, just to name a few.
I definitely don't see much Bape, and if I do, it's mostly in or around Soho. Either that, or some random guy on the train.
Ichi also made a good point - it is true that most asian kids hop on shit just for the hell of it. What can we say, asians just tend to like fashion. I'm one of those people who are definitely intrigued by the works behind the brand, so I enjoy learning about it's history.

man i can give a fuck less what people think of bape. I like their stuff, innovative as it was back in the day they still do their thing putting out some weird stuff, some nice some not. still like them for their status and symbolic value as a staple for jap streetwear
but people do wear it just for names sake and their executions are terrible (as problem child said about Big sean and wale) but end of the day, they can make it look as tacky ass possible so that we can appreciate how the people with sober tastes can do justice. whatever bape or not.
some people just see $$$. me too but its a small part of the equation to have a outfit fresher than the rest since mostly every one has and can easily acquire $$$

I wear what I like. Haven't bought anything new from the store since like 2008, however I still have most of my old stas and clothes. Don't really give a fuck about if NYers say "Bape is over that shit is whack" because at the end of the day I stillllll get just as many women as a kid in the newest "hot" styling out right now and I still like my appearance so it's whatever. People only trend hop to appear "cool" or bein in the "in crowd" so if I'm still cool and still hang around cool people what difference do the clothes make? With that being said I don't wear Bape head to toe anymore though, only sometimes but it does happen.
Edit: Also to tell you the truth even if you still wear Bape head to toe as long as you don't look like a bag of skittles you're still lightyears ahead of 3/4 of America as far as fashion. Go to the south with classic Bape items such as swaro shirts and snake skin stas they will look at you like you have on $1M worth of clothing and you will still stand out lol. People only think within the boundaries of their city/surrounding areas.

i really agree with the guys on one of the first pages saying that bape is a lifestyle. from the moments i first heard about it i loved how the clothes & stores looked. even if youre totally baped out it can look nice. and its really amazing what nigo has created, if you think of all the collaborations with so many completely different brands and companies, and also the products: clothes, shoes, soft drinks, condoms, make up, pillows, heck i dont even know
but, to stay on topic, i have to admit i'm not into as much as i was maybe last year or 2 years ago. i dont really know why, it certainly isnt because more people are wearing it ( i dont even think there are more lol) and when i got into a store (which is not that often) i'm still happy and excited, but i just dont like the clothes as much i think. im too young as well to say that it has accompanied me for many years haha
still, i will stay on the lookout for more bape hoping to find some nice things

Regurgitating what other heads have said before me, Bape definitely got my fashion sense more organized, and directed it in an entirely different direction while in my senior year in high school back in '07 which is when I decided to join the BT family even though I only had 2 pieces lol, that was a nice year for me so it will always have a place in my heart and I respect NIGO greatly for what he created, just think his sense of the brand has been lost after such a while and with such rapid exposure IMO. Thankfully I did all my research on the brand beforehand when I first bought Bape and that's what really hypnotized me, could care less about all the celebs jocking NIGO's brand and whatsoever. Mainly the OG pieces I saw had me dazzled, Daft Punk sta's, Kaws Chomper Varsity, shark hoody, etc. Not wearing much Bape anymore unless I find pieces I've always wanted. Can't understand why so many people like already mentioned in NY wear it like it's American Eagle apparel or something, very sloppily, but at least true heads will appreciate the brand and wear it nice.

What were you guys first impressions on BAPE? What really got you into buying the clothes and thinking that it was ok to wear the funky colored sneakers and the all over print hoodies? (post your first BAPE piece, memorabilia or just say what the item was).

I was looking at an issue of DUB magazine with nigo on the cover and i was like.. who the hell is this guy? sitting on Phantom with camo on and brazil flag colored sneakers? Prior to that when BWS NY first opened, i was on the bus going to the city with my mom and she was reading a newspaper. There was a spread on "sneaker culture" (back when it was booming) and this dude was holding up snakeskins and red/white/blue og's. I was like oh shit? the hell are those. prior to that... i remember seeing them on vintagekicks.com. i believe thats when i became obsessed with bapes.

I loved Bape since the first time I saw it. My first piece of Bape was the navy DC all over print hoodie with the batman ears...that was my first purchase because it stood out above all overs. I actually wanted the white one, but at that time, it was rare and more expensive.
http://img241.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/users/3/0/2/3/kazumicky333-img360x600-1286703543101010_160306.jpg
Not my photo, took this off yahoo jp.
I bought it for around $400 via Stay246 online. I was so damn excited when I first got it that I wore it during the summer, hood up, thinking I was the shit. And I noticed the stares the second I stepped out the door. It was an amazing feeling...I'm sure half of the people who were staring were just thinking how ridiculous I looked, but I'm sure half of them liked it too. I didn't give a fuck, I knew I was wearing Bape and it was some exclusive shit, so that was it for me.
I think it was ok for me to wear colorful shit back then was because I was in high school. Nike SBs were hyped up like crazy so it pretty much goes hand in hand with Bape. Colorful sneakers - Colorful hoodies. Made perfect sense to me.

loved these two pieces dearly, but my feet shrunk? and so sold them and my tee was L, which wasn't even baggy back then, but somehow now I'm a S. makes no sense. also got a milo phone cleaner but i'm sure we've all seen those anyway so no need to post a pic of :]
keeping up with sole's question, what first got me into Bape was when I accidentally stumbled upon the Heartbreaker video. I remembered so many years back I saw air force ones with a star instead in Jamaica in the inner mall Coliseum I think it's called, and that's when I began research... just took me 4 years later lol. I think there was a song that referenced them too that reminded me, but not like today where its more obvious, this was back in 07. Any who long story short, saw the video, instantly fell in love. It also helped I had relatives in Japan and they filled me in on some stuff too and Japanese street culture etc. I appreciated the fact that they were wearing loud colors and by its own standard, in a clean subtle way. I think of crs (no homo) but because its true, people rock what they want, and its indeed true. At the same time though IMO, people should not rock Bape like idiots or like this:

this a great thread btw props to solefareal90....... but just to give my take on Bape; it's true it is a lifestyle above anything else. Most of my footwear is Bape and most of my clothes is Bape I have clocks, catalogs, the stickers on my phones and I love it. I got into Bape when they were making what in my opinion I call timeless pieces with the whole Original Fake x Bathing Ape collabs and the Marvel x Bathing Ape Bapestas. In that time period I remember there being lines to get into Bape on regular days when nothing was really going to drop. The lines were made cus the quantities were more limited back then and you wanted the only medium or large in the store. Since then they have had some great releases but to me it seems like Bape had hot release after hot release after hot release back then. Maybe it was the culture back then, maybe it was how much the media embraced Bape back then... IDK. But Bape is one of those brands I will always wear regardless of whatever the fashion is at a paticular time. I remember a couple of years back there was a rumor that Nigo would not release any hoodies for a whole year and we here at the forum went crazy lol. He went on to release hoodies that year anyway, but maybe this is what he was trying to avoid... giving us too much too fast.

i was waiting for your response my dude. haha
They don't know how it used to be.
werddddddddddddd i feel you. I thought i was hating cus Im not as young as I once was. lol

too bad i lost all my pics when my computer crashed last year :(
but my first purchases were made in the London Bape store. I bought 2 pairs of bapesta's (one in orange/white and one in white/grey/neon green), a bapehead logo t-shirt in black and 2 key chains (one in cotton candy color and one in olive/sand/orange). i still have all. Good times :)

I think i seen bapes in the same newspaper you seen it in maine...my initial reaction was, "who the fuck is gonna pay 200+ for a pair of knock off uptowns???"...But then i see this feature pic in the XXL magazine and my addiction/obsession started:
http://www.xxlmag.com/Features/2005/aug/Clipse/2.jpg
I then spent the next couple of days to find out the name of the brand...then my home girl said, "you know it kind of looks like those shinny patent leather fake looking uptowns"..i got the name from there, found the store address online, headed to the store thinking i was going to buy out the store until i saw the prices..lol..i just left with this tee:

i thought the same thing yo. Im like "yes, gonna go shopping"... i walked out with a Milo tee (that i no longer have, stupid me). I couldn't believe the prices they wanted for jackets. I remember having a long convo with L (manager at the time) about why kaws were 220 and madstas were 200. He had to break down the collab and all that goodstuff. But still, i didn't even know who Kaws was. I had heard about him but i never knew what he did.

i saw my first roadsta during my college days at a 3-d design concept class. this was back 2000... i thought that shit was hilarious and ridiculous.... shinny and colorful was not my cup of tea back in the days. i then saw them reappear on m-flo's MV DOPEMAN.
like twhite said and the rest is history...
Haha I bought a fake animal kingdom hoodie because I had no idea what the fuck bape was and that it was 'exclusive'. Then I read more and more about it, threw the fake away and started buying up shit I liked.
I still dig all over camo stuff and even recently bought a black cotton candy hood because I always wanted one.
If I like something I'll wear it. Who gives a shit if internet hypebeasts say colour is dead?
Be a boy brushed in colour living in a monochrome world if that's what you like.
The only possible reason people would get online and bitch about clothing is if they are insecure little fucks who are obsessed with being 'current'.

I still remember going into a local sneaker store and after buying some sneakers asking them if they sold Bape, since I heard about it a few days earlier. Back then the store would have a few tee's in every now and then, 150 euro's each.. Anyway, shop owner told me about Anytime in HK and lucky me, I was going there 2 weeks later.
This was actually before the HK Bape store even opened, so Anytime was pretty much the only place to get stuff. I was so impressed by the whole atmosphere around it, the way that the store pretty opened when the shop owner felt like it, the whole vibe there. When we were heading there I saw one of the employees on the street, decked out in Bape.. Shit was surreal. Anyway, bought a shirt there for $120 or something, which was beyond ridiculous but I just said fuck it.
A few months later my mother went to the New York store for me, so I gave her the address and all. I get a call ''hey I'm in front of this store with a lot of colourful sneakers on display and a line-up with atleast 100 guys.. Is this it?'' Such memorable stuff. She brought back a sweater and the catalog and it was just crazy, pretty much EVERYTHING in the catalog was just too fuck dope.
Same as when I first entered a Bape store in Japan, it really felt like a kid in a candy store. When I first moved to Kyoto I had to wait 3 hours for some application forms, so I headed into the city without even the slightest clue where the Bape store was but with the sole purpose of finding it. Completely jetlagged I just asked random people on the street for atleast a hour (old Kyoto store wasn't that easy to find) until I got there, over exhausted but so happy. That feeling of walking down the hallway before you turn around the corner and entered the actual store.. People that have been there know what I mean, one of the best feelings when entering a Bape store. Kinda like entering the BBC part in the Tokyo store and walking through that dark corridor with the BBC motto on the wall in neon letters.
Man I could tell Bape related stories for hours, such good stuff.

LOL YES!!!
Exact same thing with me, hit up Tokyo for the first time and my first spot was Bape Harajuku. Got off the flight @ 6am, felt totally fucked after a plane delay and being awake for 30 hours straight, slept on the Narita Express and immediately dropped my bags off at the hotel and managed to get to JR Harajuku.
Took the next 2 hours (in brutal heat and humidity) searching around for the store despite walking past it a few times :o Finally found it and wow, was in heaven. Loved the entrance at BBC but like you said Asami, felt like a kid in a candy store.

Alright, but ill make another thread for it later, not trying to hijack this one since I have over 60 pics in that folder;
As for bape, I still rock it in my fits; hell my favorite bape hoody released just last year (black friday shark; perfect fit, black hoody, but with enough details to make it not boring  ), I have a couple of items but they are all very subtle (actually they are all monotone lol). I still never see it around here (Northern VA), seen twice on the streets. First time it was some random douche walking on the street wearing a fake red camo hoody, it was good for a laugh. The second time was a person who used to post way back in the day; his name was Startrakrida or something of the sort. Ran into him at some store head to toe in bbc/bape. Anyways im still looking for argon bapes in my size and a BBC logo varsity :nerd: if youre sitting on them give em up :typing::cell::ranger::car::heartbeat:

Man. now that I see what it has become and what people are wearing... I know some stuff now still looks good, but when you think about it, if you could be head to toe in Bape... shit that is fly as hell no matter what. it's also not the same out here in Taiwan. Actually it was never like "all that" out here at least when I started in the game about 4 years ago. I remember at that time all the stores were selling out of all the stuff and Taipei store was dead as hell. Bape was, still is, and forever be the best in my mind.

a bathing ape is still much alive in my heart.

I personally always liked the look of bape and how it stood out from everything else to me. Sadly my 'first' item was a fake bbc DnD hoodie haha. I didn't care, I was in grade 8 when I bought it and didn't want to blow hundreds of dollars on a sweater. But my first actual piece was last month from 007, a reversable baby milo hoodie and I love it. I get positive comments on it all the time :)

Nope lol, I had an account before this one too like in 06 that was deactivated. I pretty much waited till I had my own credit card so my parents didn't shit all over my face at how much some of the clothing costs, but I got it for 180 so it was pretty cheap.

Ugh, Crooks is that Karmaloop brand right. -_- Anyway, I think Bape today, as a brand is strong due to the collaborations. I find it funny when wearing something related to Bape that someone says, “Yo man Bape is played out yo” when his or her favorite rapper wears it in the newest music video.

I think its funny how when BAPE stuff is posted on hypebeast... 70% of the people hate on it. saying "bape, grow up"... haha, people stupid as hell. they need to grow up forreal.

How does everyone feel about the hate that surrounded bape over the years? Do you guys respect the ones that used to wear bape and now they call it 'old news' ? (maybe thats an obvious question)...
bapesta94
11-16-2010, 11:40 PM
If it weren't for Bape, I would still be wearing AE and Lacoste polos
I fell in love with the brand immediately, and could never buy anything until I joined Bt2 and BT a few years ago. I'll admit, from Bape, I have explored other brands and styles.. but in the end I always purchase and wear Bape products. I have the most respect for the brand.
I miss the days where WDYWT was full of Bape fits and alot more members posted on here. I know I don't anymore, but it's because the forum isn't the same. People seem to have moved on to other brands.
I know I wasn't there to experience it, but I remember when people were lining up every time a Bape hoody came out, and then could sell it for 2x retail because everybody had to have it..

I can know pretty much choose from almost all the great items becuz so many people want to buy all the other hyped overpriced crap that they fiend for, but when you buy bape you can buy more and for me it looks better than most of that junk all the other brands are coming up with now. I mean people said BAPE is dead, but other brands aren't coming out with good shit either. So you should remember that.

I mean people said BAPE is dead, but other brands aren't coming out with good shit either. So you should remember that.
People who say "Bape is dead" are usually kids who buy it because its hyped and know nothing about its history.
Its a stupid comment because no brand ever really dies even if they stop making it and don't bring it back (which they usually do a few years after stopping it) the people involved with it still do things related to the brand/fashion.
It also depends why you buy something. If you are buying it because you like it and not because of hype then fact that a load of kids who jumped on the hype train think its dead isn't going to bother you.

True story, now that I'm back in Japan I did the usual rounds but pretty much everywhere I went it was disappointing.. Maybe I'm outgrowing some of this stuff but hardly any brand has really delivered consistently lately imo.
